Leave No Trace – Protecting Lofoten’s Natural Beauty
Lofoten’s breathtaking landscapes deserve to be experienced and enjoyed by everyone, both today and for generations to come. That’s why we encourage all visitors to follow the principles of Leave No Trace — ensuring that nature remains as pristine as when you arrived.
From proper waste disposal to responsible camping and fire safety, small actions make a big difference. Here’s how you can explore responsibly while keeping Lofoten’s nature untouched:
Respecting Nature – What You Can Do
Pack Out What You Pack In
A simple rule: if you bring it with you, take it back. Even biodegradable waste, like fruit peels and food scraps, takes a long time to decompose in Lofoten’s cool climate.
✔ Avoid single-use plastics and excess packaging.
✔ Carry a small trash bag with you at all times.
✔ Recycle whenever possible.
Going to the Bathroom in Nature
If nature calls while you’re exploring, follow these steps to minimize impact:
✔ Walk at least 100 meters from water sources, trails, and campsites.
✔ Dig a small hole and cover it properly.
✔ Always pack out toilet paper and hygiene products—never leave them behind.
Setting Up a Low-Impact Camp
✔ Use existing campsites when possible.
✔ Never damage trees or vegetation when setting up a tent or hammock.
✔ Keep noise levels down and respect wildlife.
Campfires & Fire Safety
While an open fire can be cozy, it must be done responsibly:
✔ Follow Norway’s fire regulations—campfires are restricted between April 15th and September 15th, unless conditions are safe.
✔ Use established fire pits or build fires on non-sensitive surfaces like sand.
✔ Never burn plastics, aluminum, or non-biodegradable materials.
✔ Completely extinguish the fire before leaving.
By following these simple steps, we can all help preserve Lofoten’s fragile and unique environment.
Explore, experience, and enjoy—without leaving a trace!
Travel responsibly – and enjoy your journey!
