Driving in Lofoten during winter
Exploring Lofoten’s stunning winter landscapes is a unique adventure, but driving in snow and icy conditions requires preparation and caution. Here’s everything you need to know to stay safe while making the most of your journey.
Closest airport and car rental
If you’re inexperienced with driving in snowy or icy conditions, we recommend minimizing long drives during your stay. Opt for the nearest airport, Leknes Airport, just a 35-minute drive from Ramberg Resort. Car rentals are available at the airport through providers like Sixt and Hertz.
Alternatively, you can take the ferry from Bodø to Moskenes and drive approximately 36 minutes to reach us. Regardless of your route, ensure your rental car is equipped with studded winter tires for a safe journey.
Tips for winter driving in Lofoten
1. Adjust your driving style
Drive gently by avoiding sudden stops, quick direction changes, or abrupt gear shifts to prevent skidding on icy roads. Brake carefully and start slowing down earlier than usual, as stopping distances are much longer on snow or ice. Always plan your speed according to road conditions, driving slower in sharp turns, and ensuring you feel in control at all times.
2. Maintain a safe distance
Always leave extra space between your car and the vehicle ahead, as stopping takes much longer on icy roads. Be vigilant for icy patches, especially in shaded areas and intersections, where the road surface is often more slippery and unpredictable.
3. Beware of road conditions
Be mindful of specific road conditions unique to winter driving. Bridges often freeze faster than regular roads, so approach them with extra caution. During strong winds and heavy snowfall, watch for snow drifts that can obscure the road. Wet ice is particularly challenging, as it can trap your car in tracks and make steering difficult. Drive carefully and avoid unnecessary risks in such conditions.
4. Know where to stop
Stopping safely is crucial on winter roads. Avoid stopping on hills, as restarting your car can be challenging. Always evaluate whether you can safely return to the road before parking or pulling over. Remember, hazard lights are for emergencies only, such as breakdowns or accidents—not for roadside photography. If you want to capture the beautiful Lofoten scenery, use designated parking areas or spacious turnouts to ensure safety for yourself and other drivers.
5. If you get stuck or drive off the road
In the unfortunate event that you drive off the road or get stuck, safety should be your first priority. Turn on your hazard lights to alert other drivers and place a warning triangle on the road to ensure visibility. In cases of immediate danger, call 113 for emergency medical assistance. If you require help getting your vehicle back on the road, you can contact NAF or Viking for roadside assistance. Always prioritize your safety and that of others on the road.
Share the road
Roads in Lofoten are narrow, and if you’re unfamiliar with driving on snow or ice, particularly if you’re from a warmer climate, it’s crucial to drive at a slower, comfortable speed. Locals are familiar with these roads and may drive faster. If you notice cars behind you, find a safe spot to pull over and let them pass when possible.
A few final reminders
• Prepare for strong weather: Always check the weather and road conditions before heading out.
• Plan extra time: Winter weather can be unpredictable, so allow for delays.
• Safety first: Avoid unnecessary risks and prioritize safe travel over tight schedules.
With these tips, you’ll be ready to experience Lofoten’s winter wonderland safely. Whether it’s your first time driving on snow or you’re a seasoned winter driver, preparation and mindfulness are key.
Enjoy your adventure – and stay safe!
